AI Discovery Intelligence is the discipline of measuring how AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name, rank and cite brands in their answers - and of running the on-site and off-site citation work that changes those answers.
AI Discovery Intelligence treats AI answers as a measurable surface. When a buyer asks an assistant "what is the best X in Y," the engine names a short list of brands, ranks them, and cites the sources it drew on. AI Discovery Intelligence records those answers with a repeatable instrument - a fixed, client-approved set of buyer questions, re-run on a cadence with frozen denominators - then executes the citation work that changes the result, and re-measures with the identical instrument so the change can be proven rather than claimed.
The practice has three layers:
SEO optimizes a website to rank as a link on a search results page. The buyer still clicks through and evaluates the site themselves.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) describe the execution layer for AI answers: shaping content and citations so that engines surface a brand inside the answer itself. The terms are used near-interchangeably in the market.
AI Discovery Intelligence contains that execution layer but is defined by what surrounds it: the measurement instrument that runs before any work starts, and the verification that runs after. The distinction matters because AI answers cannot be inspected the way a rankings page can - without a recorded baseline and a frozen question set, no provider can show a buyer what changed. Execution without measurement is opinion.
For the practical version of this distinction - the questions to ask any provider before hiring one - see our buyer's guide and Dubai market map.
Five standard dimensions, each re-derivable from the recorded answers:
How often the brand appears anywhere in the engine's answer, across the full question set.
How often the brand leads the answer - the first name the engine gives.
Which stages of the buying journey the brand appears in, from early research questions to final comparison questions.
Whether the brand's own pages can be fetched, parsed and cited by engines: structure, schema, crawl access, answerable content.
The third-party sources engines cite when they answer - and whether the brand is present in them.
One limit is named publicly wherever this work is sold honestly: measurement captures the retrieval layer - what an engine fetches and cites in a live answer. No tool directly observes training-data exposure, and engines change models, which is why the instrument is re-run rather than trusted as a snapshot. The full account of what this work can and cannot prove is in the buyer's guide.
The term AI Discovery Intelligence was introduced by 28 Labs in 2026 to name a practice the existing labels did not cover: not content optimization alone, and not a tracking dashboard alone, but the combination of instrumented measurement, citation execution, and verified re-measurement as one discipline.
28 Labs is a Dubai-based AI Discovery Intelligence company. We measure how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity recommend brands - and run the citation work that changes the answer.
28 Labs publishes its benchmark data as the AI Visibility Index - 28 reports across 7 cities - and states its methodology limits in its client reports.
If you want your current position measured across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity - before committing to any provider - that is where we start.
